An apparently hungry Chalmette man has been arrested for stealing a duck from a public park with the intent of cooking it up for a meal, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Office said Ashmeer Tahir, 38, 3713 Juno Drive, was booked with theft of an animal Monday after someone saw him remove a muscovie duck from Sidney Torres Park in Chalmette. A sheriff's deputy found Tahir at his home with a duck inside a bucket in his van, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

A Marrero man accused of becoming so intoxicated on Sunday that he forgot his children at a snowball stand remains in custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna.
Joshua Anthony Hargis, 26, of 5316 Ehret Road, was arrested in the 2900 block of Oberlin Street in Marrero and booked with child desertion on Sunday after the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says he forgot his young children at a snowball stand for a half hour because he was inebriated.
According to an arrest report, Hargis took his two children to Scuba Steve's Snowball stand in the 2400 block of Barataria Boulevard on Sunday. A witness said Hargis appeared intoxicated when he walked up to the counter to order, the report said.
Hargis sat the children, 5 and 7 years old, on a bench in front of the stand, and returned to his vehicle where he appeared to fall asleep, the report said, A short time later, Hargis awoke from his nap, started up the vehicle and drove away leaving the children at the bench.
The witness called a deputy to the scene, and the report says the children kept saying "Dad left us." The deputy was able to contact the children's mother, who said Hargis had picked them up from her home to take them out and she hadn't heard from him after that.

Federal officials are hoping film director James Cameron can help them come up with ideas on how to stop the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The "Avatar" and "Titanic" director was among a group of scientists and other experts who met Tuesday with officials from the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal agencies for a brainstorming session on stopping the massive oil leak.
